This citywide home repair program is managed by Genesee County Habitat for Humanity to help Flint homeowners repair, improve and renovate their homes through low- or no-interest loans. The Flint Home Improvement Fund is intended for homeowners of all income levels, and no collateral is needed for loans through this program.

Funding can be used for projects such as:

  • Furnace and hot water heater replacement
  • Roof replacement or repairs
  • Kitchen and bath repairs
  • Deck and porch replacement
  • New siding
  • Accessibility modifications

To be eligible, applicants must own and occupy as their primary residence a single-family home in the city of Flint. Loan approval is based on available funding. Other eligibility criteria/requirements apply.

  • Low- or no-interest loans are available.
  • No matter what your household income level or the value of your home, you are eligible to apply.
  • You may not have to pay back all of the loan. The amount you pay back would be determined on a sliding scale based on your household income.

The program is funded by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, Michigan State Housing Development Authority, the City of Flint and the Community Foundation of Greater Flint. Learn about all of the Flint Home Improvement Fund partners below.

About the partners

For several years, foundations, nonprofits and government agencies have understood the need for a program to improve access to resources for home improvements beyond existing grant-based programs for low-to-moderate income homeowners.

Low home values in Flint can make it hard for some homeowners to secure loans for needed home improvements. In addition, many existing programs have income requirements and are not available to all Flint homeowners. To remove these barriers and strengthen Flint’s neighborhoods, city and state government, local nonprofit organizations and philanthropies, and a major bank joined together to create the Flint Home Improvement Fund.

Genesee County Habitat for Humanity will manage the program and oversee the process of home repairs. This will include client intake and construction management. Habitat will assure the quality of each project by inspecting work throughout the term of construction and performing a follow-up “warranty inspection” between six and 12 months after completion of the work.

The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation awarded grants to Genesee County Habitat for Humanity to support the Flint Home Improvement Fund. Mott Foundation funds will support no-interest loans for low-income Flint residents, as well as Habitat’s management of the program.

The City of Flint provides technical support, including the development of program guidelines. The City also is working to secure additional funding sources for the program and serving as an advocate of the Flint Home Improvement Fund by making sure it is widely promoted throughout the city.

Michigan State Housing Development Authority’s mission is to provide quality housing that is affordable, which is a cornerstone of diverse, thriving communities. MSHDA’s investment in the Flint Home Improvement Fund will help ensure households with low and moderate incomes have equal opportunity to make repairs and improvements that will improve lives, homes and neighborhoods.

The Community Foundation of Greater Flint awarded a grant from the Arthur L. Tuuri Health Fund to Genesee County Habitat for Humanity to support the Flint Home Improvement Fund. Community Foundation funds provided staff support to facilitate loan program operations.

The Genesee County Land Bank Authority will administer grant funds that originate from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. These funds will be provided to support home improvement loans to households at or below 120% of area median income (AMI), with improvements facilitated by Genesee County Habitat for Humanity.
